Narrative:

At XP00, landing runway 22R at ord, we received an expedited clearance for the high speed from tower. A turboprop was cleared to land runway 27R, with an acknowledgement to hold short of the crossing runway, ie, runway 22R. Note: all runways were dry. As we took the high speed off of runway 22R with the expedited clearance, I heard (or thought I heard) .9 on the other side, ie, ord ground frequency when across. Before crossing runway 27R, we slowed almost to a stop and looked left to see the turboprop on a normal rollout with a speed such that it could make the runway 18/36 left turnoff. I had flown turboprop aircraft in and out of ord for a number of yrs and a normal turnoff for runway 27R would be runway 18/36 -- or the next taxiway -- which was short of ours, ie, H1. We never acknowledged holding short. At no time did we feel safety was compromised or we would have queried the controller to confirm cleared to cross. We never heard a hold short clearance. It could have been blocked by our own readback of the expedited clearance. Later that evening, the captain was called at home and was told that after reviewing the tape, ATC had determined that it was an operational error. Lessons learned: if there is any doubt of a clearance, ask the controller again for clarification.

Title: MD80S FLC CROSSED A RWY AS TFC WAS LNDG. PNF COULD SEE LNDG TFC SHOULD BE ABLE TO TURN OFF RWY WELL PRIOR TO THEIR XING LOCATION. TWR SUPVR CALLED CAPT LATER TO ADVISE THE CTLR WAS INVOLVED IN AN OPERROR.

Narrative: AT XP00, LNDG RWY 22R AT ORD, WE RECEIVED AN EXPEDITED CLRNC FOR THE HIGH SPD FROM TWR. A TURBOPROP WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 27R, WITH AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO HOLD SHORT OF THE XING RWY, IE, RWY 22R. NOTE: ALL RWYS WERE DRY. AS WE TOOK THE HIGH SPD OFF OF RWY 22R WITH THE EXPEDITED CLRNC, I HEARD (OR THOUGHT I HEARD) .9 ON THE OTHER SIDE, IE, ORD GND FREQ WHEN ACROSS. BEFORE XING RWY 27R, WE SLOWED ALMOST TO A STOP AND LOOKED L TO SEE THE TURBOPROP ON A NORMAL ROLLOUT WITH A SPD SUCH THAT IT COULD MAKE THE RWY 18/36 L TURNOFF. I HAD FLOWN TURBOPROP ACFT IN AND OUT OF ORD FOR A NUMBER OF YRS AND A NORMAL TURNOFF FOR RWY 27R WOULD BE RWY 18/36 -- OR THE NEXT TXWY -- WHICH WAS SHORT OF OURS, IE, H1. WE NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED HOLDING SHORT. AT NO TIME DID WE FEEL SAFETY WAS COMPROMISED OR WE WOULD HAVE QUERIED THE CTLR TO CONFIRM CLRED TO CROSS. WE NEVER HEARD A HOLD SHORT CLRNC. IT COULD HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY OUR OWN READBACK OF THE EXPEDITED CLRNC. LATER THAT EVENING, THE CAPT WAS CALLED AT HOME AND WAS TOLD THAT AFTER REVIEWING THE TAPE, ATC HAD DETERMINED THAT IT WAS AN OPERROR. LESSONS LEARNED: IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT OF A CLRNC, ASK THE CTLR AGAIN FOR CLARIFICATION.
