Narrative:

Our aircraft was positioned to power back into alley #xx at atl. Due to the fact that there are no gate markings on the 'X' gates, I asked the captain which gate we were on. He said which is on the alley #yy side. I did not question the captain further and I called for power back. The alley #yy controller stated she could not see us but gave us clearance. We powered back into alley #xx without permission. There were no other aircraft nearby and we had wing walkers during power back.
