Narrative:

We started beverage service on cart and I went back to get coffee. We had bad turbulence from takeoff to this point and after reaching up to get coffee pot, the coffee maker must have been broken and the pot was overflowing and I did not realize this. Also, I was bouncing all over the place in the back. The pot of coffee splashed up on the right side of my face, down my neck and chest. The captain landed at mia (an unscheduled stop and diversion) and let me off. I had second degree burns on my forehead and around right eye. I deadheaded home with an iod. To prevent this, we should have been told to remain seated and not to start the service. Plus it was unfortunate the coffee maker was not working correctly and the fact that it is not mounted eye level in the galley was a factor.
