Narrative:

Taxiing for departure, lavatory smoke detector sounded, then quit. Initially, flight attendant checked lavatory and found no indication of smoke or fire. Captain asked me to notify ground control that we would need to pull off the taxiway and call maintenance. Smoke detector sounded again. This time, flight attendant said she could smell something, possibly smoke. Captain made decision to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft on the taxiway, which I relayed to ground control. Flight attendant instructed passenger to leave their carry-on's on the aircraft and exit through main cabin door. I exited with the passenger per captain's instructions to help keep everyone in an area away from the aircraft. All passenger and crew exited aircraft safely. Crash fire rescue equipment arrived on scene with airport security. No evidence of smoke or fire was immediately evident at the scene. Lavatory smoke detector was only recently installed on this type aircraft. Prior to this time, no detector or extinguishers were installed in the aircraft lavatory. When smoke detector was installed, company added procedure for in-flight smoke or fire emergency. Since this event occurred on ground, captain followed emergency evacuate/evacuation procedures.
