Narrative:

During VOR approach into sgu for runway 34, established inbound with PNF calling out stepdown points. Began next stepdown from 8000 ft to 7300 ft. At 7800 ft, GPWS alerted us with 'terrain, terrain, pull up, pull up.' immediately applied takeoff power and climbed to 10000 ft. Starting corrective action at 7800 ft ending at 10000 ft, PNF immediately advised ZLA. The missed approach altitude is 8000 ft, but as we train, began climb to a safe altitude. I believe this was a false alarm since we were established on the approach, but wanted to escape the situation and start over (unfamiliar mountainous terrain).
