Navigation error. Frequency/altitude, 17000 ft. ATC facility, ZNY. Cleared direct to bwz J6 about 4 mi west of bwz on about a 270 degree heading new york departure advised us we missed the turn over bwz onto J6. Contributing factors: altitude level off at 17000 ft and looking for crossing traffic above.
