Narrative:

First officer was PF. Over bce VOR our clearance was to proceed direct to dta VOR, but we continued north on J11. I was on radio discussing maintenance issues with company. Controller noticed error and we were cleared direct dta. On ground at slc, I spoke with supervisor at ZLC who said same thing had occurred twice earlier that same day. He was concerned that there was an ATC problem, but I felt that in our case the error had been ours. No loss of separation occurred.
