Narrative:

A thorough exterior preflight revealed no abnormalities/deficiencies. However, just after liftoff, when the landing gear was selected up, a left main landing gear 'a' system disagreement light remained illuminated. Also, the aircraft wanted to yaw left and some buffeting could be felt. We then employed CRM procedures and, after consulting with maintenance/company and attempting to troubleshoot the problem, we determined that a return to the airport would be the safest course of action. ATC provided vectors for our approach and had airport rescue/fire fighting equipment standing by near the runway just in case. The landing was uneventful and maintenance later repaired the problem.
