Narrative:

While holding at rackk intersection with 10 mi legs, the sbound limit 75 mi DME fix was exceeded resulting in a call from ATC asking for a left turn to be started. This was the first outbound leg in the holding pattern and an ATC frequency change was made. While on this outbound leg, contact was first made with the new controller at the southeast limit of the holding pattern. Initial contact was made with an immediate follow up for a request to fly 20 mi legs rather than 10 mi legs. The request was denied and we were told to start our left turn immediately as we were already past the southeast limit of the holding pattern. It was explained that the reason for the rejection of 20 mi legs was due to another holding pattern southeast of the rackk intersection. There never was a conflict with another aircraft. Supplemental information from acn 378675: at the 10 DME turn point I stated 'here is your turn.' the captain held us his finger (wait a min) as he was talking to ATC on #1 VHF communication. I assumed he was getting an amended clearance for 20 mi legs as we were led to expect. Instead it was just a new efc. Captain made inbound turn about 8 mi late. ATC stated that it was close to another holding pattern. When I was done getting ATIS information, captain asked me 'didn't they give us 15 DME legs?' I responded 'no, they gave us 10 DME legs' after referring to my written down holding clearance. Captain had not written the holding clearance down. After receiving holding clearance, captain restated it to me for verification (company policy) correctly. I assumed he would turn at the 10 mi fix and thought it was amended after he put up his finger when I stated 'here is your turn.'

Title: AN LGT ACR ACFT EXCEEDED ITS HOLDING PATTERN WHEN THE CAPT STARTED HIS INBOUND TURN TOO LATE. THE FO ATTEMPTED TO INFORM THE CAPT THAT HE WAS AT THE LIMIT TO NO AVAIL.

Narrative: WHILE HOLDING AT RACKK INTXN WITH 10 MI LEGS, THE SBOUND LIMIT 75 MI DME FIX WAS EXCEEDED RESULTING IN A CALL FROM ATC ASKING FOR A L TURN TO BE STARTED. THIS WAS THE FIRST OUTBOUND LEG IN THE HOLDING PATTERN AND AN ATC FREQ CHANGE WAS MADE. WHILE ON THIS OUTBOUND LEG, CONTACT WAS FIRST MADE WITH THE NEW CTLR AT THE SE LIMIT OF THE HOLDING PATTERN. INITIAL CONTACT WAS MADE WITH AN IMMEDIATE FOLLOW UP FOR A REQUEST TO FLY 20 MI LEGS RATHER THAN 10 MI LEGS. THE REQUEST WAS DENIED AND WE WERE TOLD TO START OUR L TURN IMMEDIATELY AS WE WERE ALREADY PAST THE SE LIMIT OF THE HOLDING PATTERN. IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT THE REASON FOR THE REJECTION OF 20 MI LEGS WAS DUE TO ANOTHER HOLDING PATTERN SE OF THE RACKK INTXN. THERE NEVER WAS A CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 378675: AT THE 10 DME TURN POINT I STATED 'HERE IS YOUR TURN.' THE CAPT HELD US HIS FINGER (WAIT A MIN) AS HE WAS TALKING TO ATC ON #1 VHF COM. I ASSUMED HE WAS GETTING AN AMENDED CLRNC FOR 20 MI LEGS AS WE WERE LED TO EXPECT. INSTEAD IT WAS JUST A NEW EFC. CAPT MADE INBOUND TURN ABOUT 8 MI LATE. ATC STATED THAT IT WAS CLOSE TO ANOTHER HOLDING PATTERN. WHEN I WAS DONE GETTING ATIS INFO, CAPT ASKED ME 'DIDN'T THEY GIVE US 15 DME LEGS?' I RESPONDED 'NO, THEY GAVE US 10 DME LEGS' AFTER REFERRING TO MY WRITTEN DOWN HOLDING CLRNC. CAPT HAD NOT WRITTEN THE HOLDING CLRNC DOWN. AFTER RECEIVING HOLDING CLRNC, CAPT RESTATED IT TO ME FOR VERIFICATION (COMPANY POLICY) CORRECTLY. I ASSUMED HE WOULD TURN AT THE 10 MI FIX AND THOUGHT IT WAS AMENDED AFTER HE PUT UP HIS FINGER WHEN I STATED 'HERE IS YOUR TURN.'
