Narrative:

While en route to teb, I was in contact with ZNY. Near teb, I was cleared for the VOR approach, although I had expected a visual approach because I was in VMC. I was also given a vector which I understood to mean that I would be vectored to a final approach course. I changed the VOR indications accordingly. Apparently, the vector was to the VOR instead of the final approach course. When I missed the IAF, ATC advised me of traffic and the miss. At this time I observed teb airport and requested a visual to land. I was cleared to land by teb tower. No conflict.

Title: PA28-236 ACFT ON VECTOR FOR APCH TO TEB, RPTR PLT MISUNDERSTOOD WHERE THE VECTOR WOULD TAKE HIM. RPTR SAW ARPT AND REQUESTED VISUAL APCH LNDG WHICH WAS GIVEN.

Narrative: WHILE ENRTE TO TEB, I WAS IN CONTACT WITH ZNY. NEAR TEB, I WAS CLRED FOR THE VOR APCH, ALTHOUGH I HAD EXPECTED A VISUAL APCH BECAUSE I WAS IN VMC. I WAS ALSO GIVEN A VECTOR WHICH I UNDERSTOOD TO MEAN THAT I WOULD BE VECTORED TO A FINAL APCH COURSE. I CHANGED THE VOR INDICATIONS ACCORDINGLY. APPARENTLY, THE VECTOR WAS TO THE VOR INSTEAD OF THE FINAL APCH COURSE. WHEN I MISSED THE IAF, ATC ADVISED ME OF TFC AND THE MISS. AT THIS TIME I OBSERVED TEB ARPT AND REQUESTED A VISUAL TO LAND. I WAS CLRED TO LAND BY TEB TWR. NO CONFLICT.
