Narrative:

The flight was IFR from rno to acv. As we climbed out the copilot who was flying in the left seat asked me to request a VFR climb from reno departure. They acknowledged our request and issued the clearance to 'climb VFR.' we turned west and were given traffic (VFR) to watch for. We then climbed above 15000 ft which we were assigned. There was some confusion while we watched for traffic and discussed whether a VFR climb was a climb in VFR conditions to an assigned altitude or a suspension of the IFR clearance the PF returned to 15000 ft. I contacted ZOA and said we were VFR and would like to continue on an IFR clearance. They reissued our IFR and a climb to FL230.

Narrative: THE FLT WAS IFR FROM RNO TO ACV. AS WE CLBED OUT THE COPLT WHO WAS FLYING IN THE L SEAT ASKED ME TO REQUEST A VFR CLB FROM RENO DEP. THEY ACKNOWLEDGED OUR REQUEST AND ISSUED THE CLRNC TO 'CLB VFR.' WE TURNED W AND WERE GIVEN TFC (VFR) TO WATCH FOR. WE THEN CLBED ABOVE 15000 FT WHICH WE WERE ASSIGNED. THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION WHILE WE WATCHED FOR TFC AND DISCUSSED WHETHER A VFR CLB WAS A CLB IN VFR CONDITIONS TO AN ASSIGNED ALT OR A SUSPENSION OF THE IFR CLRNC THE PF RETURNED TO 15000 FT.
