Narrative:

Upon departure from runway 25L at lax, tower queried our heading. We were in the turn going through 230 degrees to 200 degrees. Apparently the turn was not soon enough for ATC and I was instructed to start the turn sooner in the future. Conditions were a 1000 ft overcast and I was single pilot at the time per our operations specifications. We cannot start a turn until at a safe altitude. Being in IMC, and completing necessary checklist at the time, I feel that I began my turn as soon as practicable as well as safe.
