Narrative:

On climb out the flight attendant reported a loud noise from the forward galley door. I had the first officer make an inspection and he found the door safety strap between the door and the door frame. After consideration of possible aircraft damage, I decided to return to the departure airport and make an overweight landing. We landed at 8000 pounds over the maximum landing weight for the airplane. A maintenance inspection was completed and no damage was found, from the strap or the overweight landing. We then re- departed with no further problems. It may be an over simplification but a little more care by the last person to close the aircraft door would have saved the problem from happening at all.
