Narrative:
Aircraft was handed off to point mugu approach. When point mugu took automated handoff, a '6' was shown as the target symbol (which is normal). About 1 min later, the '6' became a 'C,' indicating ZLA had the handoff. There had been no handoff to ZLA and no reason for a 'C' to appear as the target symbol. This confused me, and required extensive coordination with point mugu and ZLA.

Title: SCT CTLR EFFECTS HDOF TO NTD, THEN OBSERVES THE ACFT DATA BLOCK CHANGE TO A ZLA TRACKING SYMBOL AND INVESTIGATES.
Narrative: ACFT WAS HANDED OFF TO POINT MUGU APCH. WHEN POINT MUGU TOOK AUTOMATED HDOF, A '6' WAS SHOWN AS THE TARGET SYMBOL (WHICH IS NORMAL). ABOUT 1 MIN LATER, THE '6' BECAME A 'C,' INDICATING ZLA HAD THE HDOF. THERE HAD BEEN NO HDOF TO ZLA AND NO REASON FOR A 'C' TO APPEAR AS THE TARGET SYMBOL. THIS CONFUSED ME, AND REQUIRED EXTENSIVE COORD WITH POINT MUGU AND ZLA.
