Narrative:

Cleared for mustang 4, runway 17R, vectors to join J92. During climb, allowed distrs (aircraft spacing on aircraft 4-5 mi ahead, its jet wash, radio calls), plus not-to-scale drawing and thinking 'vectors' to join to J92 to 'get in the way' of primary job of flying the SID (backing up the captain who was flying). (This occurred even though we mentioned the 3 DME turn in the pre takeoff briefing.) began turn when controller asked us if we were cleared the fmg 4. I responded 'yes.' he then asked, 'when are you going to turn?' we turned immediately at that point. Causes: distrs (minor), not-to-scale drawing, my error.
