Narrative:

I left venice airport in a hurry -- just picked up my plane after annual. Had an IFR flight plan on file but it was over 2 hours old due to delays from mechanic. Took off and radioed tpa to pick up my clearance. They could not spot me on radar. I continued northbound VFR at 1000 ft AGL. Turned on GPS to monitor airspace. The mechanic had put the GPS antenna on the floor and I didn't realize the unit was not receiving a signal. I kept calling tpa but they didn't see a target in my area. I turned around (back sbound) at 9 DME from sarasota. They finally spotted me and said I was 5 mi from the sarasota airport. I may have violated the class C airspace. Things I learned: slow down, renew flight plan on ground even if it's now very hard to get through on the phone. Have a VFR chart out even on an IFR flight. Make sure the GPS is working before taking off!
