Narrative:

After starting engines, ground instructed us to 'taxi to runway 23R, hold short runway 23L.' since no specific route was given we used taxiway J and held short of runway 28 to avoid possible confusion. Tower then instructed us to taxi up to and hold short of runway 23L, further stating that normally aircraft taxi 'farther to the east' to get to runway 23R. As the aircraft taxied slowly forward, I looked down at my airport diagram, to make sure I was where I thought I was, and tower said 'you can stop there.' I then realized that the nose of the aircraft had passed the hold short line. I wish tower had let me hold short of runway 28 as I had wanted to, to avoid just this sort of confusion.

Title: MD88 CROSSED THE RWY 23L HOLD LINE WHILE TAXIING FOR A RWY 23R DEP. CLRNC HAD BEEN ISSUED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L.

Narrative: AFTER STARTING ENGS, GND INSTRUCTED US TO 'TAXI TO RWY 23R, HOLD SHORT RWY 23L.' SINCE NO SPECIFIC RTE WAS GIVEN WE USED TXWY J AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 28 TO AVOID POSSIBLE CONFUSION. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L, FURTHER STATING THAT NORMALLY ACFT TAXI 'FARTHER TO THE E' TO GET TO RWY 23R. AS THE ACFT TAXIED SLOWLY FORWARD, I LOOKED DOWN AT MY ARPT DIAGRAM, TO MAKE SURE I WAS WHERE I THOUGHT I WAS, AND TWR SAID 'YOU CAN STOP THERE.' I THEN REALIZED THAT THE NOSE OF THE ACFT HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I WISH TWR HAD LET ME HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28 AS I HAD WANTED TO, TO AVOID JUST THIS SORT OF CONFUSION.
