Narrative:

Cleared to 'cut across the pad. Cleared for takeoff runway 22L. Traffic 7 out' (for runway 27L). As we approached the runway, tower called, 'cancel takeoff clearance! You're on the wrong runway! You're one taxiway off.' then tower cleared us to 'turn right on runway 27L and immediate turn again to clear. Hold short of runway 22L.' we complied and were then reclred for takeoff runway 22L. I first thought we had somehow gotten onto runway 27L without knowing, but study of the ord chart showed we had approached runway 22L on taxiway Q instead of taxiway D. We did not enter runway 27L without permission, but had tower not canceled the takeoff, we would have taken off runway 22L at taxiway Q, approximately 700 ft remaining. While this would not have been unsafe for an MD80, we did not have a tps for that intersection. The runway 27L/22L/holding pad area is confusing at best, however I should have realized we were not at the end of runway 22L, and I would have as soon as we reached the runway. I should not have angled across the pad to reach runway 22L. This would have prevented me from getting on taxiway Q. Ord tower indicated there was no problem and no conflict. But this report is being submitted as a safety item. Supplemental information from acn 356700: tower told us to make a right turn on runway 27L and another right turn on taxiway D to runway 22L. At no time did we taxi onto runway 27L without clearance.

Title: AN 'OUT OF TOWN' ACR MD80 CREW TAXIES TO THE WRONG RWY AT ORD. NIGHT OP.

Narrative: CLRED TO 'CUT ACROSS THE PAD. CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 22L. TFC 7 OUT' (FOR RWY 27L). AS WE APCHED THE RWY, TWR CALLED, 'CANCEL TKOF CLRNC! YOU'RE ON THE WRONG RWY! YOU'RE ONE TXWY OFF.' THEN TWR CLRED US TO 'TURN R ON RWY 27L AND IMMEDIATE TURN AGAIN TO CLR. HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22L.' WE COMPLIED AND WERE THEN RECLRED FOR TKOF RWY 22L. I FIRST THOUGHT WE HAD SOMEHOW GOTTEN ONTO RWY 27L WITHOUT KNOWING, BUT STUDY OF THE ORD CHART SHOWED WE HAD APCHED RWY 22L ON TXWY Q INSTEAD OF TXWY D. WE DID NOT ENTER RWY 27L WITHOUT PERMISSION, BUT HAD TWR NOT CANCELED THE TKOF, WE WOULD HAVE TAKEN OFF RWY 22L AT TXWY Q, APPROX 700 FT REMAINING. WHILE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN UNSAFE FOR AN MD80, WE DID NOT HAVE A TPS FOR THAT INTXN. THE RWY 27L/22L/HOLDING PAD AREA IS CONFUSING AT BEST, HOWEVER I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED WE WERE NOT AT THE END OF RWY 22L, AND I WOULD HAVE AS SOON AS WE REACHED THE RWY. I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANGLED ACROSS THE PAD TO REACH RWY 22L. THIS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED ME FROM GETTING ON TXWY Q. ORD TWR INDICATED THERE WAS NO PROB AND NO CONFLICT. BUT THIS RPT IS BEING SUBMITTED AS A SAFETY ITEM. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 356700: TWR TOLD US TO MAKE A R TURN ON RWY 27L AND ANOTHER R TURN ON TXWY D TO RWY 22L. AT NO TIME DID WE TAXI ONTO RWY 27L WITHOUT CLRNC.
