Narrative:

I was on the VOR approach to whp coming up on the FAF vny, when ATC called out traffic to the north and 500 ft below on a south heading, also to the vny VOR. I was at 3000 ft in and out of clouds but sighted the reported traffic. This traffic occupied my attention long enough for me to miss timing FAF passage and to make the course change at the fix. I recognized the course change problem and corrected. The timing turned out to be no problem because descent to MDA brought VFR and I sighted the airport. When this occurred I was on whp tower frequency, so socal approach was not in contact. Whp tower was not aware of my impending arrival.

Title: BE35 PLT RECEIVES TFC CALL OVER THE VOR WHICH IS THE FAF FOR HIS APCH. THE DISTR CAUSES HIM TO MISS THE FAF AND DIDN'T START TIMING FOR HIS APCH. HE ENTERS VMC AND MAKES LNDG.

Narrative: I WAS ON THE VOR APCH TO WHP COMING UP ON THE FAF VNY, WHEN ATC CALLED OUT TFC TO THE N AND 500 FT BELOW ON A S HDG, ALSO TO THE VNY VOR. I WAS AT 3000 FT IN AND OUT OF CLOUDS BUT SIGHTED THE RPTED TFC. THIS TFC OCCUPIED MY ATTN LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO MISS TIMING FAF PASSAGE AND TO MAKE THE COURSE CHANGE AT THE FIX. I RECOGNIZED THE COURSE CHANGE PROB AND CORRECTED. THE TIMING TURNED OUT TO BE NO PROB BECAUSE DSCNT TO MDA BROUGHT VFR AND I SIGHTED THE ARPT. WHEN THIS OCCURRED I WAS ON WHP TWR FREQ, SO SOCAL APCH WAS NOT IN CONTACT. WHP TWR WAS NOT AWARE OF MY IMPENDING ARR.
