Narrative:

At approximately XA30 hours, I took off from 74S after announcing on CTAF that I was departing runway 18. Runway 18 has a right hand traffic pattern. A right turn was made to the crosswind leg after reaching the shoreline and climb was continued. At approximately 900 ft MSL, the pilot in the right seat (a retired major airline captain) sighted a bonanza at the 10 O'clock position.I saw the aircraft at the same time and noted that it had started a right turn. The subject aircraft was about 25 ft vertically and 200 ft horizontally away from our position. There was no time for evasive action on my part. I did not hear this aircraft make any radio calls on CTAF. I contacted the approach control of the class C airspace. He advised me of 3 aircraft in the proximity of 74S and did not mention that he was in contact with subject aircraft. If subject aircraft was entering the right downwind for runway 18 he was coming from class C airspace which has a floor of 1300 ft MSL and at the crosswind position for departing aircraft. The entry to the right hand downwind leg at an uncontrolled airport should be at a 45 degree angle to the downwind leg at mid-field. Suggested corrective action: educate pilots on correct entry procedures to traffic patterns at uncontrolled airports during biennial flight reviews. Also advise pilots during the biennial flight review that current up to date charts and airport directories should be used and viewed for correct frequencys and other data. (The CTAF for this and other island airports in the san juans was changed recently. There are still transient pilots using the old frequency.)

THE SUBJECT ACFT WAS ABOUT 25 FT VERTLY AND 200 FT HORIZLY AWAY FROM OUR POS. THERE WAS NO TIME FOR EVASIVE ACTION ON MY PART. I DID NOT HEAR THIS ACFT MAKE ANY RADIO CALLS ON CTAF. SUGGESTED CORRECTIVE ACTION: EDUCATE PLTS ON CORRECT ENTRY PROCS TO TFC PATTERNS AT UNCTLED ARPTS DURING BIENNIAL FLT REVIEWS. ALSO ADVISE PLTS DURING THE BIENNIAL FLT REVIEW THAT CURRENT UP TO DATE CHARTS AND ARPT DIRECTORIES SHOULD BE USED AND VIEWED FOR CORRECT FREQS AND OTHER DATA. (THE CTAF FOR THIS AND OTHER ISLAND ARPTS IN THE SAN JUANS WAS CHANGED RECENTLY. THERE ARE STILL TRANSIENT PLTS USING THE OLD FREQ.)
