Narrative:

I was cleared to climb through the altitude of another aircraft after center verified that I had them in sight, and could maintain visual separation. When I started my climb, it appeared that we were on a converging flight path, so I asked the controller for the other aircraft's heading. At the time, I was heading 270 degrees and never heard the controller's reply. I repeated my request and then the pilot of the other aircraft stated 'heading 310 degrees.' I immediately realized that we were converging and quite rapidly, so I began an evasive maneuver, right turn, and instant climb. I feel that the controller should have cautioned me about the other aircraft heading and that we were on converging paths.

Title: AN ACR DC8 FREIGHTER ACCEPTED VISUAL SEPARATION FROM ANOTHER ACFT TO CLB THROUGH THE OTHER ACFT'S ALT. THE DC8 HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION. NIGHT OP. FAST CLB AND TURN TO ACHIEVE THE SEPARATION THAT HE THOUGHT WAS PROPER.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO CLB THROUGH THE ALT OF ANOTHER ACFT AFTER CTR VERIFIED THAT I HAD THEM IN SIGHT, AND COULD MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION. WHEN I STARTED MY CLB, IT APPEARED THAT WE WERE ON A CONVERGING FLT PATH, SO I ASKED THE CTLR FOR THE OTHER ACFT'S HDG. AT THE TIME, I WAS HDG 270 DEGS AND NEVER HEARD THE CTLR'S REPLY. I REPEATED MY REQUEST AND THEN THE PLT OF THE OTHER ACFT STATED 'HDG 310 DEGS.' I IMMEDIATELY REALIZED THAT WE WERE CONVERGING AND QUITE RAPIDLY, SO I BEGAN AN EVASIVE MANEUVER, R TURN, AND INSTANT CLB. I FEEL THAT THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE CAUTIONED ME ABOUT THE OTHER ACFT HDG AND THAT WE WERE ON CONVERGING PATHS.
