Narrative:

Clearance was to 8000 ft. Shortly after takeoff, clearance was changed to climb to 5000 ft. Captain, jump seat rider and myself confirmed 5000 ft, and I read back 5000 ft. After leveling at 5000 ft controller said our call sign, 'you know you just did a no-no.' on questioning him, he said we were cleared to 4000 ft. I told him I read back 5000 ft. He said no harm, no foul. No conflict encountered. 3 pilots on board confirmed controller's instructions was to stop climb at 5000 ft.
