Narrative:

On final approach to runway 12L in stl, I was the PF, called for gear down flaps 20 degrees, before landing checklist. The first officer put the gear down and flaps 20 degrees and started the checklist. I noticed that both main gear had a red unsafe light indication but the landing gear horn never went off. I called for a go around which was executed, but the gear handle would not go to the up position. We did some troubleshooting. Talked to maintenance and followed the emergency gear down checklist and pumped the gear down and got 3 green (safe) indications and landed on runway 12L safely at stl. I did not declare an emergency, but I did ask for the emergency vehicles to be safe.
