Narrative:

I was cleared to land on runway 8L with traffic on a 6 mi final. I was on base leg when tower informed me that I overshot/extended my base through final approach for runway 8L. I did not realize at the time that my approach/runway in sight was, inadvertently, for runway 8R. Tower told me to do a go around which I commenced to do, offset to the left of runway 8R. I did not understand instructions, fly heading 030 degrees. I asked for tower to repeat once or twice. I was told to call tower upon landing, at which time I was informed that an FAA deviation (ie: ticket, traffic) would be issued. I told tower personnel that I would provide any information after discussing what I should do with a legal advisor. Performance pilot: trying to review what happened and why. Perhaps I was complacent as having landed at this airport many times over the past 12 yrs and for some reason I did not realize I was setting up for runway 8R not 8L. I was concerned with expediting my approach, which we are normally told to do, so I would not hinder the air carrier on final. (In my own way, try to enhance GA at sky harbor.) I was concerned about the crosswind component, ATIS report wind at 140 degrees, 11 KTS gusting to 16 KTS, at landing, wind was at 6-7 KTS. For some reason what I saw did not register with me that I was approaching the wrong runway.

Title: PLT OF A PIPER ARROW, PA28-180, OVERSHOT BASE LEG AND FLEW THROUGH FINAL FOR AN APCH TO THE WRONG PARALLEL RWY RESULTING IN TWR INTERVENTION AND A GAR.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 8L WITH TFC ON A 6 MI FINAL. I WAS ON BASE LEG WHEN TWR INFORMED ME THAT I OVERSHOT/EXTENDED MY BASE THROUGH FINAL APCH FOR RWY 8L. I DID NOT REALIZE AT THE TIME THAT MY APCH/RWY IN SIGHT WAS, INADVERTENTLY, FOR RWY 8R. TWR TOLD ME TO DO A GAR WHICH I COMMENCED TO DO, OFFSET TO THE L OF RWY 8R. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTIONS, FLY HDG 030 DEGS. I ASKED FOR TWR TO REPEAT ONCE OR TWICE. I WAS TOLD TO CALL TWR UPON LNDG, AT WHICH TIME I WAS INFORMED THAT AN FAA DEV (IE: TICKET, TFC) WOULD BE ISSUED. I TOLD TWR PERSONNEL THAT I WOULD PROVIDE ANY INFO AFTER DISCUSSING WHAT I SHOULD DO WITH A LEGAL ADVISOR. PERFORMANCE PLT: TRYING TO REVIEW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY. PERHAPS I WAS COMPLACENT AS HAVING LANDED AT THIS ARPT MANY TIMES OVER THE PAST 12 YRS AND FOR SOME REASON I DID NOT REALIZE I WAS SETTING UP FOR RWY 8R NOT 8L. I WAS CONCERNED WITH EXPEDITING MY APCH, WHICH WE ARE NORMALLY TOLD TO DO, SO I WOULD NOT HINDER THE ACR ON FINAL. (IN MY OWN WAY, TRY TO ENHANCE GA AT SKY HARBOR.) I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE XWIND COMPONENT, ATIS RPT WIND AT 140 DEGS, 11 KTS GUSTING TO 16 KTS, AT LNDG, WIND WAS AT 6-7 KTS. FOR SOME REASON WHAT I SAW DID NOT REGISTER WITH ME THAT I WAS APCHING THE WRONG RWY.
