Narrative:

While cruising at 14000 ft, we received clearance to cross aml VOR at 8000 ft. While reviewing the approach with the first officer, we did not notice that vertical navigation mode had disengaged. The aircraft was manually descended, but not in time to make the restr. ATC was notified.

Narrative: WHILE CRUISING AT 14000 FT, WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS AML VOR AT 8000 FT. WHILE REVIEWING THE APCH WITH THE FO, WE DID NOT NOTICE THAT VERT NAV MODE HAD DISENGAGED. THE ACFT WAS MANUALLY DSNDED, BUT NOT IN TIME TO MAKE THE RESTR. ATC WAS NOTIFIED.
