Narrative:

On a flight from cvg to mia, our flight plan included J89 from atl to cawly intersection. My first officer was reading the flight plan and told me to intercept the 179 degree radial from atl. I looked at the high altitude chart and asked if tlh was the next fix to which he responded in the affirmative. When we were about 42 mi out on the 179 degree radial, my first officer discovered his mistake. We should have been on the 161 degree radial per our filed flight plan. I initiated a 45 degree left heading correction to intercept the J89. I spoke to the first officer and discovered he felt he missed the error due to his fatigue from the previous night. Though he was indeed legal rested, he had been called in as reserve pilot after a long day the previous flight day.

I LOOKED AT THE HIGH ALT CHART AND ASKED IF TLH WAS THE NEXT FIX TO WHICH HE RESPONDED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE. WHEN WE WERE ABOUT 42 MI OUT ON THE 179 DEG RADIAL, MY FO DISCOVERED HIS MISTAKE. WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE 161 DEG RADIAL PER OUR FILED FLT PLAN. I INITIATED A 45 DEG L HDG CORRECTION TO INTERCEPT THE J89. I SPOKE TO THE FO AND DISCOVERED HE FELT HE MISSED THE ERROR DUE TO HIS FATIGUE FROM THE PREVIOUS NIGHT. THOUGH HE WAS INDEED LEGAL RESTED, HE HAD BEEN CALLED IN AS RESERVE PLT AFTER A LONG DAY THE PREVIOUS FLT DAY.
