Narrative:
Given what we thought was direct ape and climb to FL230. The captain read back direct ape and FL230. I was unclr so asked the captain to confirm with departure our clearance. The departure controller responded, maintain 12000 ft direct ape, ZOB 134.9. The center controller cleared us to FL230. We had passed 12500 ft and descended to 12000 ft. We don't know if we were cleared to FL230 by departure or not.

THE DEP CTLR RESPONDED, MAINTAIN 12000 FT DIRECT APE, ZOB 134.9. THE CTR CTLR CLRED US TO FL230. WE HAD PASSED 12500 FT AND DSNDED TO 12000 FT. WE DON'T KNOW IF WE WERE CLRED TO FL230 BY DEP OR NOT.
