Narrative:

On a flight from iad to ewr, we were cleared to climb to 13000 ft by baltimore approach. At 13800 ft we were advised by ATC of our altitude deviation. We immediately descended to 13000 ft. Our flight director did not maintain altitude capture mode which allowed the autoplt to continue to climb above the selected altitude.

Narrative: ON A FLT FROM IAD TO EWR, WE WERE CLRED TO CLB TO 13000 FT BY BALTIMORE APCH. AT 13800 FT WE WERE ADVISED BY ATC OF OUR ALTDEV. WE IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO 13000 FT. OUR FLT DIRECTOR DID NOT MAINTAIN ALT CAPTURE MODE WHICH ALLOWED THE AUTOPLT TO CONTINUE TO CLB ABOVE THE SELECTED ALT.
