Narrative:

I was cleared runway 33 from the point that I called up at, which was about 20 ft from the hold short line of the active runway. I called for clearance and taxi instructions on tower frequency and was cleared runway 33. I took the position to takeoff on the runway, not receiving position and hold nor hold short instructions. Tower told me that he did not want me to take the runway, and I immediately offered to clear. He said no problem, just be careful next time and cleared me to takeoff. I apologized again and took off IFR to clt without any problems. I believe that this could have been eliminated had tower been more precise with the instructions. Although I realize that if there is any doubt I am obligated to ask and clear up any confusion, but at the time I felt it was clear. Next time I will ask!

Title: SMA TAXIES ONTO RWY WITHOUT CLRNC TO DO SO.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED RWY 33 FROM THE POINT THAT I CALLED UP AT, WHICH WAS ABOUT 20 FT FROM THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF THE ACTIVE RWY. I CALLED FOR CLRNC AND TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ON TWR FREQ AND WAS CLRED RWY 33. I TOOK THE POS TO TKOF ON THE RWY, NOT RECEIVING POS AND HOLD NOR HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS. TWR TOLD ME THAT HE DID NOT WANT ME TO TAKE THE RWY, AND I IMMEDIATELY OFFERED TO CLR. HE SAID NO PROB, JUST BE CAREFUL NEXT TIME AND CLRED ME TO TKOF. I APOLOGIZED AGAIN AND TOOK OFF IFR TO CLT WITHOUT ANY PROBS. I BELIEVE THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED HAD TWR BEEN MORE PRECISE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS. ALTHOUGH I REALIZE THAT IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT I AM OBLIGATED TO ASK AND CLR UP ANY CONFUSION, BUT AT THE TIME I FELT IT WAS CLR. NEXT TIME I WILL ASK!
