Narrative:
Principal runway in use was runway 6. I requested runway 31. Ground control responded 'cleared to runway 31, taxi to runway 31.' my location was point a and I misunderstood the instruction to mean I was cleared to taxi from point a to point B. The controller informed me that his wording cleared me from point a to point C, and I had not been cleared to cross runway 31. I realize this problem arises because the runway to be crossed is the same as the runway requested. Had I been at point D, and requested runway 6, the response would have been 'cleared to runway 6 taxi to runway 31.' to correct this sort of problem: I believe use of the words 'hold short' should be mandatory.
