Narrative:

This planned flight from jackson, westover direct compton was flown on victor airways. While on victor 23 entering the los angeles TCA and upon transfer to socal I was asked my intentions. I reported a desire to fly the corridor directly over lax much as I had done several previous flts to san diego. I expected to remain with socal controllers and their assistance in not allowing any mistakes on my part while making the flight through the TCA and corridor. Much to my surprise, I was directed to drop down to 3500 ft squawk 1201 and fly VFR over the santa monica airport and VOR and outbound over lax at 3500 ft. Santa monica and lax, (when I arrived at that position) were still the last parts of land obscured by a 1000 ft cloud and fog layer, and I could not locate either airport. Since everything to the east was clear, I decided it best to turn toward several freeways that I knew would take me to compton airport. I reduced altitude to get below the 2000 ft floor of the TCA and turned south staying under inbound lax traffic. I am concerned that I may have busted some airspace and altitudes in my effort to get down below the control zones. In my preflight planning, I did not get a complete enough understanding of the proper corridor, entry and exit at compton airport and the proper use of the santa monica VOR. Upon my arrival at compton, I looked up the airport manager, pulled out my charts and went over the procedures for entry and exit. My departure later that afternoon was correct and uneventful due to his help in preparation for the departure.

Narrative: THIS PLANNED FLT FROM JACKSON, WESTOVER DIRECT COMPTON WAS FLOWN ON VICTOR AIRWAYS. WHILE ON VICTOR 23 ENTERING THE LOS ANGELES TCA AND UPON TRANSFER TO SOCAL I WAS ASKED MY INTENTIONS. I RPTED A DESIRE TO FLY THE CORRIDOR DIRECTLY OVER LAX MUCH AS I HAD DONE SEVERAL PREVIOUS FLTS TO SAN DIEGO. I EXPECTED TO REMAIN WITH SOCAL CTLRS AND THEIR ASSISTANCE IN NOT ALLOWING ANY MISTAKES ON MY PART WHILE MAKING THE FLT THROUGH THE TCA AND CORRIDOR. MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, I WAS DIRECTED TO DROP DOWN TO 3500 FT SQUAWK 1201 AND FLY VFR OVER THE SANTA MONICA ARPT AND VOR AND OUTBOUND OVER LAX AT 3500 FT. SANTA MONICA AND LAX, (WHEN I ARRIVED AT THAT POS) WERE STILL THE LAST PARTS OF LAND OBSCURED BY A 1000 FT CLOUD AND FOG LAYER, AND I COULD NOT LOCATE EITHER ARPT. SINCE EVERYTHING TO THE E WAS CLR, I DECIDED IT BEST TO TURN TOWARD SEVERAL FREEWAYS THAT I KNEW WOULD TAKE ME TO COMPTON ARPT. I REDUCED ALT TO GET BELOW THE 2000 FT FLOOR OF THE TCA AND TURNED S STAYING UNDER INBOUND LAX TFC. I AM CONCERNED THAT I MAY HAVE BUSTED SOME AIRSPACE AND ALTS IN MY EFFORT TO GET DOWN BELOW THE CTL ZONES. IN MY PREFLT PLANNING, I DID NOT GET A COMPLETE ENOUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROPER CORRIDOR, ENTRY AND EXIT AT COMPTON ARPT AND THE PROPER USE OF THE SANTA MONICA VOR. UPON MY ARR AT COMPTON, I LOOKED UP THE ARPT MGR, PULLED OUT MY CHARTS AND WENT OVER THE PROCS FOR ENTRY AND EXIT. MY DEP LATER THAT AFTERNOON WAS CORRECT AND UNEVENTFUL DUE TO HIS HELP IN PREPARATION FOR THE DEP.
