Narrative:

On a cross country from I48 to kosv the pilot circled his home at an elevation of plus or minus 3.5 NM from don scott airfield, then flew in a westerly direction to a point 6 plus or minus NM west of kosu and requested permission to land, the pilot had the current ATIS report and was 'squawking' 1200 ft on his transponder during the event. Upon landing at kosu the tower requested that the pilot contact tower chief (X) the following day. Mr X reviewed class D airspace with reporter on dec/xx/94. Reporter called the columbus FSDO and discussed the incident with mr Y on dec/xx/94. Pilot has reviewed class D airspace (AOPA's aviation USA -- 1994 2-41) and understands the improper distances and altitudes that were involved. At no time was another aircraft within visual distance of pilot -- during the circling pattern. The problem arose because pilot believed that he was more than 4 NM from kosu when over his house. Pilot has taken corrective acton by reviewing class a,B,C, and D airspace requirements.

Title: UNAUTH PENETRATION OF CLASS D AIRSPACE BY CFI ON A PLEASURE FLT.

Narrative: ON A XCOUNTRY FROM I48 TO KOSV THE PLT CIRCLED HIS HOME AT AN ELEVATION OF PLUS OR MINUS 3.5 NM FROM DON SCOTT AIRFIELD, THEN FLEW IN A WESTERLY DIRECTION TO A POINT 6 PLUS OR MINUS NM W OF KOSU AND REQUESTED PERMISSION TO LAND, THE PLT HAD THE CURRENT ATIS RPT AND WAS 'SQUAWKING' 1200 FT ON HIS XPONDER DURING THE EVENT. UPON LNDG AT KOSU THE TWR REQUESTED THAT THE PLT CONTACT TWR CHIEF (X) THE FOLLOWING DAY. MR X REVIEWED CLASS D AIRSPACE WITH RPTR ON DEC/XX/94. RPTR CALLED THE COLUMBUS FSDO AND DISCUSSED THE INCIDENT WITH MR Y ON DEC/XX/94. PLT HAS REVIEWED CLASS D AIRSPACE (AOPA'S AVIATION USA -- 1994 2-41) AND UNDERSTANDS THE IMPROPER DISTANCES AND ALTS THAT WERE INVOLVED. AT NO TIME WAS ANOTHER ACFT WITHIN VISUAL DISTANCE OF PLT -- DURING THE CIRCLING PATTERN. THE PROB AROSE BECAUSE PLT BELIEVED THAT HE WAS MORE THAN 4 NM FROM KOSU WHEN OVER HIS HOUSE. PLT HAS TAKEN CORRECTIVE ACTON BY REVIEWING CLASS A,B,C, AND D AIRSPACE REQUIREMENTS.
