Narrative:

Flight crew misread flight plan. ATC brought to crew's attention that aircrew flew jet airway instead of going direct. I was dealing with a warning light with the emergency checklist and was not following flight crew actions until ATC called. No conflict with other traffic. Supplemental information from acn 297910: misread flight plan. Should have gone direct psb instead of on J64. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter flies the B-727-200 domestically for a major united states air carrier. Both the reporter and his first officer failed to read the flight plan properly and flew J-64 out of rav instead of going direct psb. ARTCC called the crew, 'where are you going?' and was not upset. The reporter refers to an aci on the jumpseat as being on a 'fund raising tour,' watching for a violation so that a fine can be levied.
