Narrative:

Our flight had been rerted. Because of the rerte we were behind schedule. I picked up our clearance as we taxied out from ben from slc center. The clearance was cleared as filed climb and maintain 15000 ft -- squawk. The altitude alerter was set to 16000 ft. I rotated the knob. 1000 ft and did not notice I had inadvertently set it to 17000 ft. We took off and climbed on course to 17000 ft. Slc center received us on radar and asked us to verify our altitude. I responded 16800 ft. They replied that wasn't our clearance altitude but said no problem. We then requested 170 for a final. There is no reason to rush, you never know when a simple mistake like this can cost you a lot.
