Narrative:

From approximately 200 to 145 mi northwest of vulcan, we experienced an inability to communicate with ZME on 118.62 which appeared to be caused by a stuck microphone on frequency. After realizing that this condition was not going to clear up, we chose the first frequency on the back of the en route chart to regain contact with center. That frequency turned out to be nashville approach. It took several referral frequencys before we regained contact. Immediately prior to contact with nashville (at approximately 145 mi northwest of vuz) we were alerted by TCASII of an aircraft passing right to left of our course at the same altitude. We made visual contact and watched as it passed approximately 4 mi in front of us. Upon contact with center, we were told to turn to a heading of 180 degrees for traffic. This was followed by an on course heading after we told them we had the traffic visually. (Traffic was well clear of our path.) comments: captain picked the first frequency for ZME from the back of the en route chart. This was not a ZME frequency. More delay was experienced while we were rted from one frequency to another before finally regaining contact. I know of no specific procedures for a stuck microphone on your frequency. Usually the condition clears up quickly. During this entire period, 118.62 was unusable. We elected, early on, to switch frequencys and regain contact on another frequency. TCASII is a great system.

Title: FLC EXPERIENCE A STUCK MIKE COM PROB RESULTING IN LOST COM FOR APPROX 7 MINS.

Narrative: FROM APPROX 200 TO 145 MI NW OF VULCAN, WE EXPERIENCED AN INABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WITH ZME ON 118.62 WHICH APPEARED TO BE CAUSED BY A STUCK MIKE ON FREQ. IT TOOK SEVERAL REFERRAL FREQS BEFORE WE REGAINED CONTACT. IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO CONTACT WITH NASHVILLE (AT APPROX 145 MI NW OF VUZ) WE WERE ALERTED BY TCASII OF AN ACFT PASSING R TO L OF OUR COURSE AT THE SAME ALT. WE MADE VISUAL CONTACT AND WATCHED AS IT PASSED APPROX 4 MI IN FRONT OF US. UPON CONTACT WITH CTR, WE WERE TOLD TO TURN TO A HDG OF 180 DEGS FOR TFC. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY AN ON COURSE HDG AFTER WE TOLD THEM WE HAD THE TFC VISUALLY. (TFC WAS WELL CLR OF OUR PATH.) COMMENTS: CAPT PICKED THE FIRST FREQ FOR ZME FROM THE BACK OF THE ENRTE CHART. USUALLY THE CONDITION CLRS UP QUICKLY. DURING THIS ENTIRE PERIOD, 118.62 WAS UNUSABLE. WE ELECTED, EARLY ON, TO SWITCH FREQS AND REGAIN CONTACT ON ANOTHER FREQ. TCASII IS A GREAT SYS.
