Narrative:

On arrival from abq to dfw flight on sep/xx/94 normal single engine taxi at dfw. At gate ran normal engine shutdown checklist. When external power came on line APU was shut down and normal transfer of power was observed on panel indicating external power was providing power to both left/right busses. Cockpit cleanup was accomplished and we departed to the next gate for flight to mci. Time between flts was 1 hour. The first officer and I did not leave in any rush due to just going to the next gate. We did not notice any left engine noise on the jet bridge ramp was basically empty at this time. First officer then went to next gate for preflight of outbound flight. Approximately 10- 15 mins later we were notified of left engine running on auxiliary current and maintenance had shut down the engine. I was debriefed by maintenance that the engine was running and had been shut down, but he found the status of the cockpit had been through a complete shutdown checklist with the exception of the left engine running. As an added note, debriefs have been written by the flight attendants that they were in the back of the aircraft cleaning and stated it was real quiet and they would have heard the left engine running.
