Narrative:

Both myself and a king air reported and entered a left downwind for runway 4 at approximately the same time. The tower acknowledged both aircraft and cleared the king air to land on runway 4. He came back moments later and requested that I extend my downwind and he would call my base. Throughout all of this the controller had both aircraft in sight and began reporting to each of us where the other was. I finally saw the king air when they were on base and I was approaching the threshold of the active runway. The king air also saw me about then and made a steep banking left turn to avoid a mid-air collision. The tower never acknowledged that we were too close at any point. Because of that there could have been a very bad accident.
