Narrative:

Aircraft was brought into service from hangar. Taxi pilot closed captain's sliding window, flight engineer checked window on preflight, captain checked window on before start checklist. On takeoff roll, upper aft corner of window came open. Ground speed dictated continuing takeoff, climb and level off to assess problem. Noise level precluded proper communication. It was not possible to close the window, the trip could not be continued, so an over weight landing was made (410000 pounds and 62000 pounds over) smoothly touching down at 100 ft per second sink. Upon gate arrival, both sets of alignment marks were still aligned, the lock lever was still locked, but none of the rear dogs were in place. Aircraft was taken OTS for overweight landing inspection. Subsequent logbook entry indicated proper window operation with no malfunction. Fix consisted of opening and closing window. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporting first officer states that the captain tried to close the window while airborne with no success. The noise started early in the takeoff roll, but the crew chose to continue the takeoff as they were very heavy. The noise was very loud, both on the ground and in the air, making communications impossible for the captain who was using a c-clamp (company issue) type headset.

Title: OVERWT LNDG FOLLOWING A COCKPIT WINDOW THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY CLOSED.

Narrative: ACFT WAS BROUGHT INTO SVC FROM HANGAR. TAXI PLT CLOSED CAPT'S SLIDING WINDOW, FE CHKED WINDOW ON PREFLT, CAPT CHKED WINDOW ON BEFORE START CHKLIST. IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO CLOSE THE WINDOW, THE TRIP COULD NOT BE CONTINUED, SO AN OVER WT LNDG WAS MADE (410000 LBS AND 62000 LBS OVER) SMOOTHLY TOUCHING DOWN AT 100 FT PER SECOND SINK. THE NOISE STARTED EARLY IN THE TKOF ROLL, BUT THE CREW CHOSE TO CONTINUE THE TKOF AS THEY WERE VERY HVY. THE NOISE WAS VERY LOUD, BOTH ON THE GND AND IN THE AIR, MAKING COMS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE CAPT WHO WAS USING A C-CLAMP (COMPANY ISSUE) TYPE HEADSET.
