Narrative:

I failed to turn to a heading of 140 degrees after departing runway 22R at bos as published in the logan 9 departure SID. I believe that I originally set 140 degrees in the heading selector but must have selected it back to runway heading. First officer did not notice it because he was preoccupied with the automatic throttle not advancing the right throttle to proper position during the takeoff. Contributing to the problem was 1 of the 2 jump seat riders was constantly chatting to me while we were taxiing out for takeoff. I'm a new captain on this aircraft and I should have told my guest to stop talking during critical phases of flight so that I could concentrate on my duties instead of the latest company gossip. I feel that I learned a lesson about briefing very jumpseat rider on the sterile cockpit procedures. Supplemental information from acn 272232: as we broke ground and started to climb, I became involved in manually setting the takeoff/climb EPR and was not paying that close of attention to our ground track. When I contacted bos departure control they asked if tower had given us a straight out departure and we responded no, and told them we were given the logan 9. They (departure control) told us to turn left to a heading of 090 degrees and nothing more was said. I think the captain (the PF) is a little guilty of the same thing. The departure was hand flown by the captain, not the FMC.

Title: HDG TRACK POS DEV.

Narrative: I FAILED TO TURN TO A HDG OF 140 DEGS AFTER DEPARTING RWY 22R AT BOS AS PUBLISHED IN THE LOGAN 9 DEP SID. I BELIEVE THAT I ORIGINALLY SET 140 DEGS IN THE HDG SELECTOR BUT MUST HAVE SELECTED IT BACK TO RWY HDG. FO DID NOT NOTICE IT BECAUSE HE WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH THE AUTO THROTTLE NOT ADVANCING THE R THROTTLE TO PROPER POS DURING THE TKOF. CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROB WAS 1 OF THE 2 JUMP SEAT RIDERS WAS CONSTANTLY CHATTING TO ME WHILE WE WERE TAXIING OUT FOR TKOF. I'M A NEW CAPT ON THIS ACFT AND I SHOULD HAVE TOLD MY GUEST TO STOP TALKING DURING CRITICAL PHASES OF FLT SO THAT I COULD CONCENTRATE ON MY DUTIES INSTEAD OF THE LATEST COMPANY GOSSIP. I FEEL THAT I LEARNED A LESSON ABOUT BRIEFING VERY JUMPSEAT RIDER ON THE STERILE COCKPIT PROCS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 272232: AS WE BROKE GND AND STARTED TO CLB, I BECAME INVOLVED IN MANUALLY SETTING THE TKOF/CLB EPR AND WAS NOT PAYING THAT CLOSE OF ATTN TO OUR GND TRACK. WHEN I CONTACTED BOS DEP CTL THEY ASKED IF TWR HAD GIVEN US A STRAIGHT OUT DEP AND WE RESPONDED NO, AND TOLD THEM WE WERE GIVEN THE LOGAN 9. THEY (DEP CTL) TOLD US TO TURN L TO A HDG OF 090 DEGS AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. I THINK THE CAPT (THE PF) IS A LITTLE GUILTY OF THE SAME THING. THE DEP WAS HAND FLOWN BY THE CAPT, NOT THE FMC.
