Narrative:

Language barrier a definite factor. I called barcelona clearance delivery and received a 'cleared to madrid as filed, runway heading' -- no altitude given yet. We were filed on the vibok 1A SID for runway 20 at lebl. On the SID, you maintain runway heading until 500 ft AGL, then turn left to barsa intersection. Our takeoff clearance was runway heading maintain 3000 ft. I did not ask if this was heading for vectors but wrongly assumed until 500 ft then a left turnout as depicted on the SID. We switched to departure and leveled off at 3000 ft MSL. We were IMC about 1200-2500 ft MSL. At 2500 ft MSL we saw an aircraft at 4000 ft MSL and 11 O'clock. He was level. I was informed immediately by departure that we turned in error and that barcelona would investigate. The 'cleared as filed' on the SID, suckered me into flying the runway heading only until reaching 500 ft AGL. I should have inquired about the heading and SID.

Title: HDG TRACK POS DEV IN A NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC PROC.

Narrative: LANGUAGE BARRIER A DEFINITE FACTOR. I CALLED BARCELONA CLRNC DELIVERY AND RECEIVED A 'CLRED TO MADRID AS FILED, RWY HDG' -- NO ALT GIVEN YET. WE WERE FILED ON THE VIBOK 1A SID FOR RWY 20 AT LEBL. ON THE SID, YOU MAINTAIN RWY HDG UNTIL 500 FT AGL, THEN TURN L TO BARSA INTXN. OUR TKOF CLRNC WAS RWY HDG MAINTAIN 3000 FT. I DID NOT ASK IF THIS WAS HDG FOR VECTORS BUT WRONGLY ASSUMED UNTIL 500 FT THEN A L TURNOUT AS DEPICTED ON THE SID. WE SWITCHED TO DEP AND LEVELED OFF AT 3000 FT MSL. WE WERE IMC ABOUT 1200-2500 FT MSL. AT 2500 FT MSL WE SAW AN ACFT AT 4000 FT MSL AND 11 O'CLOCK. HE WAS LEVEL. I WAS INFORMED IMMEDIATELY BY DEP THAT WE TURNED IN ERROR AND THAT BARCELONA WOULD INVESTIGATE. THE 'CLRED AS FILED' ON THE SID, SUCKERED ME INTO FLYING THE RWY HDG ONLY UNTIL REACHING 500 FT AGL. I SHOULD HAVE INQUIRED ABOUT THE HDG AND SID.
