Narrative:

Air carrier X on ILS runway 9R mia int, cleared for visual approach to runway 9R. Instructed to maintain 190 KTS to 5 DME. At 8 DME we appeared to be rapidly closing on led aircraft (from 5 mi to 3 1/2 mi fairly quickly) noticed this visually and on TCASII. Slowed our aircraft to 170 KTS controller became concerned about our speed and I advised we had slowed because of our conversion rate. We picked our speed back up and were on a 2 mi final when lead aircraft cleared runway.
