Narrative:

Air carrier X, a 727 was inbound on the STAR, level at 6000. Small aircraft Y, C-185 was VFR outbound at 5500 ft. Traffic was exchanged when the aircraft were 5 mi apart, both level at their respective altitudes. Both aircraft reported the other one in sight. As they were passing, 1/2 mi laterally, air carrier X advised 'we're climbing for traffic.' I rogered him. Air carrier X only climbed 100 or 200 ft and was never a confliction with anyone, however, I felt it was an unnecessary maneuver, since the aircraft were separated, had visual contact with each other, and were passing 1/2 mi apart.
