Narrative:

Dc-10 air carrier X was rerouted over the mem VOR level at 6000 ft. The aircraft was observed climbing and leveled off at 9000 ft. When questioned about the maneuver pilot stated he had received a ground proximity alert and initiated emergency procedures. The highest MVA in the mem area is 2300 ft. This event occurred during heavy traffic and thunderstorm activity.

Title: ACR X GPWS UNAUTH CLB FROM ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: DC-10 ACR X WAS REROUTED OVER THE MEM VOR LEVEL AT 6000 FT. THE ACFT WAS OBSERVED CLBING AND LEVELED OFF AT 9000 FT. WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT THE MANEUVER PLT STATED HE HAD RECEIVED A GND PROX ALERT AND INITIATED EMER PROCS. THE HIGHEST MVA IN THE MEM AREA IS 2300 FT. THIS EVENT OCCURRED DURING HVY TFC AND TSTM ACTIVITY.
