Narrative:
New captain was flying aircraft. We were cleared direct to inyoe intersection to hold. I keyed the holding pattern into the FMC just as ATC cleared us from FL310 to a lower (FL280?) altitude. I acknowledged ATC and set the new altitude into the MCP window just as the captain asked me about entering holding patterns into the FMC. While explaining it to him, I did not notice that we had not begun our descent until ATC gave us an immediate right turn to avoid another air carrier aircraft also at FL310. I think in the future I'll be more aware of my situation when flying with a crewmember who is new to the airplane.
