Narrative:

Pilot was approaching oshkosh airport to land for fly-in. Pilot had advisory notice on board and had monitored ATIS. Was listening on approach frequency for controller's directions. Encountered extremely light traffic in vicinity of ripon which was a surprise. Followed railroad tracks toward airport. Controller idented aircraft. Pilot replied with rocking of wings. Controller told pilot to turn right for landing on runway 36R and monitor osh tower. Pilot turned, but could not see runway at this point. Pilot then wandered on original course and flew parallel to runway 9/27 into traffic departing runway 27. Had contact and conversation with osh tower who advised aircraft to make right turn and then land on runway 36R. Several aircraft taking off were within 200 ft of this aircraft. Landed safely with no further incident. Pilot was not prepared for light traffic and had not fully prepared for the approach, should have known all landmarks and listened to controller. Fortunately no damage was done, learned a good lesson.

ENCOUNTERED EXTREMELY LIGHT TFC IN VICINITY OF RIPON WHICH WAS A SURPRISE. FOLLOWED RAILROAD TRACKS TOWARD ARPT. CTLR IDENTED ACFT. PLT REPLIED WITH ROCKING OF WINGS. CTLR TOLD PLT TO TURN R FOR LNDG ON RWY 36R AND MONITOR OSH TWR. PLT TURNED, BUT COULD NOT SEE RWY AT THIS POINT. PLT THEN WANDERED ON ORIGINAL COURSE AND FLEW PARALLEL TO RWY 9/27 INTO TFC DEPARTING RWY 27. HAD CONTACT AND CONVERSATION WITH OSH TWR WHO ADVISED ACFT TO MAKE R TURN AND THEN LAND ON RWY 36R. SEVERAL ACFT TAKING OFF WERE WITHIN 200 FT OF THIS ACFT. LANDED SAFELY WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. PLT WAS NOT PREPARED FOR LIGHT TFC AND HAD NOT FULLY PREPARED FOR THE APCH, SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ALL LANDMARKS AND LISTENED TO CTLR. FORTUNATELY NO DAMAGE WAS DONE, LEARNED A GOOD LESSON.
