Narrative:

I was cleared to takeoff runway 12 by hts tower. After takeoff, was told to turn to heading 360 degrees (previously cleared to 4000 ft). Traffic was 3 mi to east. As I was in the climbing turn, tower told me to stop at 2000 ft, and at the same time my first officer pointed traffic at our 2 O'clock position. The inbound aircraft and myself had to take evasive action to avoid hitting each other. The worst thing was tower turned me into traffic that without the turn we would have missed by a long shot.
