Narrative:

In IMC, approximately 2 NM west of sel VOR on ATC assigned heading of 290 degrees, cleared from 8000 ft to 2500 ft. At approximately 6000 ft received continuous GPWS warning 'pull up, terrain' and master warning light came on. Initiated climb and reidented sel VOR and reverified position with raw data on navigation display (raw data displayed on both navigation displays at time of warning -- #1 on sel VOR and #2 on kip VOR). GPWS was turned off and flight continued without further incident. During pull-up from GPWS warning, altitude reached approximately 9000 ft before descent reestablished. Attempted to communicate to sel approach control reason for climb, but unable due to language barrier. Reason for incident was faulty GPWS.

Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION PERFORMED AFTER RECEIPT OF GPWS WHICH WAS DETERMINED TO BE A FALSE ALARM.

Narrative: IN IMC, APPROX 2 NM W OF SEL VOR ON ATC ASSIGNED HDG OF 290 DEGS, CLRED FROM 8000 FT TO 2500 FT. AT APPROX 6000 FT RECEIVED CONTINUOUS GPWS WARNING 'PULL UP, TERRAIN' AND MASTER WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. INITIATED CLB AND REIDENTED SEL VOR AND REVERIFIED POS WITH RAW DATA ON NAV DISPLAY (RAW DATA DISPLAYED ON BOTH NAV DISPLAYS AT TIME OF WARNING -- #1 ON SEL VOR AND #2 ON KIP VOR). GPWS WAS TURNED OFF AND FLT CONTINUED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. DURING PULL-UP FROM GPWS WARNING, ALT REACHED APPROX 9000 FT BEFORE DSCNT REESTABLISHED. ATTEMPTED TO COMMUNICATE TO SEL APCH CTL REASON FOR CLB, BUT UNABLE DUE TO LANGUAGE BARRIER. REASON FOR INCIDENT WAS FAULTY GPWS.
