Narrative:

We had clearance from ramp control to begin our taxi to runway to contact ground control for further taxi instructions. We failed to make this contact, due to the close proximity of runway to the gate area. We were busy running checklists when we switched from ramp control frequency to tower frequency. Tower told us of our mistake. We were caught up with starting our #1 engine (normal procedure is to taxi on 1 engine) that we forgot about our primary concern of taxiing the aircraft. With all these cost cutting measures by our corporate leaders and 'fly fast' programs from our chief pilots, it's easy to forget, in this new airline world, what us pilots are really here for and what we were always taught -- safety.

Title: LTT TAXIED TO RWY WITHOUT CLRNC FROM GND CTLR.

Narrative: WE HAD CLRNC FROM RAMP CTL TO BEGIN OUR TAXI TO RWY TO CONTACT GND CTL FOR FURTHER TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. WE FAILED TO MAKE THIS CONTACT, DUE TO THE CLOSE PROX OF RWY TO THE GATE AREA. WE WERE BUSY RUNNING CHKLISTS WHEN WE SWITCHED FROM RAMP CTL FREQ TO TWR FREQ. TWR TOLD US OF OUR MISTAKE. WE WERE CAUGHT UP WITH STARTING OUR #1 ENG (NORMAL PROC IS TO TAXI ON 1 ENG) THAT WE FORGOT ABOUT OUR PRIMARY CONCERN OF TAXIING THE ACFT. WITH ALL THESE COST CUTTING MEASURES BY OUR CORPORATE LEADERS AND 'FLY FAST' PROGRAMS FROM OUR CHIEF PLTS, IT'S EASY TO FORGET, IN THIS NEW AIRLINE WORLD, WHAT US PLTS ARE REALLY HERE FOR AND WHAT WE WERE ALWAYS TAUGHT -- SAFETY.
