Narrative:

While over danbury airport, I contacted ny approach for VFR clearance to transition TCA to home airport, 47N (kupper, nj). Ny approach said my transponder wasn't operating and to stay clear of TCA. I proceeded generally west to a point clear of TCA permitting straight (LORAN on board) run to 47N outside TCA. Flight proceeded normally until approximately 10 mi wnw of morristown, nj, airport. Engine began running rough with drop in manifold pressure, possibly carburetor ice. Engine had been installed only day prior and had only approximately 3 hours on it. I contacted morristown tower and told them of my situation and asked clearance to make a precautionary landing. I then turned toward morristown holding approximately 4500 ft for safety. I did not think to contact ny approach for TCA clearance (floor of TCA at morristown is 3000 ft). I stayed in contact with morristown tower and once airport was guaranteed, began descent to uneventful landing. I stopped the aircraft at parking and checked spark plugs for tightness, wires for connections, oil level and the like. I then started engine and did several runups with normal indications. I then received clearance to takeoff and asked to be able to climb to altitude over airport in case problem developed. At 2000 ft I switched to ny approach. I climbed through 3000 ft, but I don't remember if I was cleared into TCA or not. Ny approach then guided me to approximately 20 mi to 47N where uneventful landing was made. In hindsight, I should have left the plane at morristown and taken a taxi.

Narrative: WHILE OVER DANBURY ARPT, I CONTACTED NY APCH FOR VFR CLRNC TO TRANSITION TCA TO HOME ARPT, 47N (KUPPER, NJ). NY APCH SAID MY XPONDER WASN'T OPERATING AND TO STAY CLR OF TCA. I PROCEEDED GENERALLY W TO A POINT CLR OF TCA PERMITTING STRAIGHT (LORAN ON BOARD) RUN TO 47N OUTSIDE TCA. FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY UNTIL APPROX 10 MI WNW OF MORRISTOWN, NJ, ARPT. ENG BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH WITH DROP IN MANIFOLD PRESSURE, POSSIBLY CARB ICE. ENG HAD BEEN INSTALLED ONLY DAY PRIOR AND HAD ONLY APPROX 3 HRS ON IT. I CONTACTED MORRISTOWN TWR AND TOLD THEM OF MY SIT AND ASKED CLRNC TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG. I THEN TURNED TOWARD MORRISTOWN HOLDING APPROX 4500 FT FOR SAFETY. I DID NOT THINK TO CONTACT NY APCH FOR TCA CLRNC (FLOOR OF TCA AT MORRISTOWN IS 3000 FT). I STAYED IN CONTACT WITH MORRISTOWN TWR AND ONCE ARPT WAS GUARANTEED, BEGAN DSCNT TO UNEVENTFUL LNDG. I STOPPED THE ACFT AT PARKING AND CHKED SPARK PLUGS FOR TIGHTNESS, WIRES FOR CONNECTIONS, OIL LEVEL AND THE LIKE. I THEN STARTED ENG AND DID SEVERAL RUNUPS WITH NORMAL INDICATIONS. I THEN RECEIVED CLRNC TO TKOF AND ASKED TO BE ABLE TO CLB TO ALT OVER ARPT IN CASE PROB DEVELOPED. AT 2000 FT I SWITCHED TO NY APCH. I CLBED THROUGH 3000 FT, BUT I DON'T REMEMBER IF I WAS CLRED INTO TCA OR NOT. NY APCH THEN GUIDED ME TO APPROX 20 MI TO 47N WHERE UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE. IN HINDSIGHT, I SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PLANE AT MORRISTOWN AND TAKEN A TAXI.
