Narrative:
Lost oil temperature on engine #1. I saw it was broken on climb out and went back to iah to have it repaired. I saw it was broken on climb out but cannot say for sure that it was working before takeoff. A closer look at the gauges before takeoff or a system on the aircraft that tells you that a gauge is not working would help.

Title: RETURN LAND MANDATED BY ACFT EQUIP PROB MALFUNCTION.
Narrative: LOST OIL TEMP ON ENG #1. I SAW IT WAS BROKEN ON CLBOUT AND WENT BACK TO IAH TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I SAW IT WAS BROKEN ON CLBOUT BUT CANNOT SAY FOR SURE THAT IT WAS WORKING BEFORE TKOF. A CLOSER LOOK AT THE GAUGES BEFORE TKOF OR A SYS ON THE ACFT THAT TELLS YOU THAT A GAUGE IS NOT WORKING WOULD HELP.
